The arm tube was bimetallic, the underlying aluminium was plated first in copper, then nickel and finally Black Chrome.
Using the spring to adjust downforce worked well enough but the additional resonance detracted from the performance. The original idea had been to use the spring in such a way as to increase tracking force over warped records by sufficiently to keep the cartridge stable.
Unfortunately it was difficult to maintain an accurate set of mechanical qualities so we reverted to the sliding weight.
Finally, the high damping in the early bearings was not suitable for the fashion change to higher compliant cartridges in the 1990’s, so this was also changed.
